on the unusual behaviour of whales

Perhaps they want to be beached.

Maybe they get stressed and agitated because the vets try to get them back to their pod, when really, they never want to see their pod again.

Maybe they just don't want to live anymore, and they just want to be left alone in peace, to pass away peacefully on a pleasant shore, their last memory being that of the blinding sun beating down on them as they drift away from this world to horizons far and beyond our own reach.

After all, don't humans get like that too, sometimes?
